Double-Wide
My beloved Olive Oyl and I, as well as my eldest daughter, Krapuzar, spent the past week in Oaxaca, Mexico and had a terrific time. Mexico is teeming with artists and artisans of all kinds and as Mexican cities go, Oaxaca is one of the most saturated with creativity.
Truth Alternatives
One way in which the Internet has been particularly effective is in showing us humans how vulnerable we are to believing bullshit. In fact, it would seem these days that the more pungent and steaming the poop pile, the more avidly people will sign up as a crusader for it.
Big Turf Puffs
This is the time of year when media outlets of all kinds are releasing their lists for 2018; most important news stories, best TV shows, movies, music, books, etc. For me, recapping 2018 would be like remembering the year one spent being held hostage by toddlers who regularly kick you between the legs and hit you in the face with a Supersoaker between episodes of running around the neighborhood stealing babies and setting fire to buildings.
Taking the Bait
In years past, I've created Xmas-themed cartoons for this time of year but that didn't happen this year. I'm required by my publishers to submit cartoons four weeks before publication so I needed to write the cartoon for this date back in November and I just wasn't feeling Xmasy—even in a sarcastic way.
Career Versatility
In today's economy, it pays to have a wide assortment of skills at the ready. As for me, I've been a store clerk, delivery driver, busboy, graphic designer, store display artist, commercial illustrator, sign painter, muralist, cartoonist, fine artist, stand-up comic, TV show host, and painter.
Kitty Dog Klub
I really enjoy drawing dogs as I hope you can tell from this cartoon. They come in so many different sizes, shapes, colors, and textures. Ever wondered why various breeds of cats are not as varied as dogs are?
Home Groan
I'm all for urban gardening and if you live in an apartment building, your only option may be your roof. If you've ever tried to grow a garden on your rooftop you know that one of the biggest problems is flying deer eating your plants on Christmas Eve. Another is drone cameras spotting your plants and reporting you to the DEA.
Rise & Fall
Like quicksand, bottomless pits are one of those things that explorers of uncharted territory are taught to look out for. I always appreciate it when people take the time to label such things but also wonder how the person who erected this sign knew the pit had no bottom.
A Woman's Work
This is one of those cartoons that is meant to be more editorial than funny. In one way, it serves to point out that women in modern societies typically have it better than they did 150 years ago. But is that actually true?
Forbidden Fig
I don't know about the rest of the world, but here in Mexico we changed the clocks last weekend for Daylight Savings Time or to quit having Daylight Savings Time and go back to Not Saving Anything Time or whatever it is called.
Blue Genes
I find the science of genetic modification equal parts fascinating and scary. Amazing things have been accomplished already and the potential for wonders beyond our imaginations is limited only to the imaginations of people who are smarter than you and I can even imagine.
Teenage Hairwolf
The next full moon happens in my neighborhood on October 24, which will give me just enough time to recover from my own murderous romp in the woods before the opening reception of my first non-cartoon-art exhibition on the 27th.
Hidden Treasures
In spite of the similar nature of their hats, pirates and cowboys don't always mix well as I first discovered in this cartoon back in 2008. Like full-size cannons and reggae music, not everything that worked in the Carribean worked on the American frontier.
Bizarro Caption Contest
Hey, Jazz Pickles! I've not done a caption contest in over 12 decades so I thought maybe it was time. Below is an old Bizarro cartoon of mine for which I invite you to come up with a new caption. The winner will be chosen by Olive Oyl, the K2s, and I and will be announced on my weekly blog post this coming Sunday, Oct 7.
No See Ums
I'd like to thank the eight people above for their help in getting this week's cartoon in on deadline. I've nothing to say about the ninth guy other than that there's one in every crowd who thinks there's no problem and doesn't want to help. The U.S. Senate is teeming with guys like that right now.
Killin' Thangs
I have mixed emotions about hunting. Doubtless there is primal pleasure to be found in activities that our species has been engaging in for tens of thousands of years, and there is no denying that animals killed by hunters live vastly better, more natural lives than do the overwhelming majority of domesticated food animals.
Distracted Dining
By this time in the history of our short-lived, self-destructive species, we've all be "phubbed" and have likely been guilty of phubbing others. I've noticed while walking my dogs that when they get a smell in their snoot, they are as incapable of paying attention to anything else as many people are when they are on their smartphone.
Falling
The above cartoon is blatantly political of course, but I will resist commenting on it as doing so would invariably fall into one of two categories: preaching to the choir or falling on deaf ears. So instead, let's talk about a fun thing that Olive Oyl, my daughters (the K2) and I did last week on Instagram!
