Fly By

I’m Dan Piraro, the creator of the Bizarro newspaper comic. Each week, I post my Sunday Bizarro comic, then a short essay, then the past week’s Monday-Saturday Bizarro comics written and drawn by my partner, Wayno whose weekly blog post can be seen here. I highly recommend it.

Here’s the ANSWER KEY to this week’s Sunday comic, above.

Wayno and I have been collaborating on jokes for a couple of decades now. In this week’s Sunday Bizarro (above) I’ve gathered three that we’ve done on the same theme. I’ve discussed in this space before how much fun it is for cartoonists to contribute to longstanding cartoon tropes like the ancient fly-in-the-soup joke, which is so old that no one is certain where it originated. For reasons not yet understood by science, certain setups lend themselves to a seemingly unlimited number of punchlines by thousands of cartoonists over the years. Adding one’s own take on a famous trope sort of feels like making your small mark on history..

We are also honored to be a part of history with our 2023 Bizarro Therapy Calendar. True, everything that happens to anyone at any time is a part of history but that’s no reason not to be proud of it. We assembled 13 of our favorite Bizarro cartoons about psychology and therapy and shoved them lovingly into an old-fashioned paper calendar like your great-great-grandparents used to use. It’s perfect for keeping track of everything in your life from how far around the sun we are to how soon your car will be repossessed if you don’t make that payment. Get yours today.

Finally, I did a kind of long interview with a website and they posted it this week. If for some reason you feel you don’t yet know enough about me, you can read it here.

You can never know enough about my partner, Wayno, so let’s add this week’s Bizarro cartoons to our knowledge…

That’s strange. My nemesis is also from Wisconsin.

Few things are as funny as watching clowns trying to put out a house fire.

Only four Secret Symbols but two of them are wickedly hidden.

I’d like to call your attention to how good an Eyeball of Observation embroidered patch would look on your fez. Okay, so we’re sold out of those but we have three other patches that would look just as good on your fez.

As awful as his songs are, he sounds better than Owlvin and the Chipmunks.

It was just after midnight at a bait ball that she lost her glass flipper.

That’s the closing bell of our cartoon schlock exchange. Thanks for sticking around to help us sweep up the ticker tape. If you’re enjoying our work and appreciate that we don’t have pop-ups and click bait, please consider helping us keep it that way vai one or more of the links below. We’ll fall asleep with you on our minds and a smile on our faces.

Until next time, never trust soup that has an insect-parts-ratio above 1 per 85,000.
