Happy new year, Jazz Pickles. As I write this I am not recovering from the hangover I did not get from drinking too much last night. I used to drink a lot more than I do these days but in general, I’m not one to get drunk on New Year’s Eve. In fact, I haven’t even left the house for it more than a few times in the last twenty years.
But last night, Olive Oyl and I broke with tradition and joined a few thousand people in the plaza (El Jardín) in front of the big cathedral (la Parroquia) in the center of town. Each year, they launch a huge fireworks display over the square and I think it’s fun to occasionally be that close to commercial-grade fireworks. When they’re right overhead, they can be pretty awesome. I particularly enjoyed the way the church looked as though it was either blowing up or rising from the gates of Hell. BTW: the church is bigger than it looks in these pictures. I’m looking uphill at it and there’s a stand of trees blocking the bottom half of it.
