Say My Name

I’m Dan Piraro, the creator of the Bizarro newspaper comic. Each week, I post my Sunday Bizarro comic, then a short essay, then the past week’s Monday-Saturday Bizarro comics written and drawn by my partner, Wayno. You can see Wayno’s weekly blog post here and I highly recommend it.

Here’s the ANSWER KEY to this week’s Sunday comic, above.

——————————————————

Bienvenidos, amigos y Pepinillos de Jazz. First on the agenda today is a hearty thanks from my buddy, Dave, about whom I wrote in my previous post last week. He was gratified to see how many of you Jazz Pickles wished him well in the comments and asked that I thank you for your kind words. Also, he received an offer of help from one of you that may result in the transplant he needs! I’m sure you share my happiness about that.

If everyone in the world was as cool as you JPs, it would be a better world, indeed. (Yes, there is a small handful of total tools who are fans of Bizarro but I do not bestow upon them the mystical mantle of “Jazz Pickle.” Don’t ask me how I know or accomplish that, it’s mystical, so it defies effability.) (No, that’s not a word but I think it’s an amusing adjective for the opposite of “ineffable.”)

Regarding the cartoon and title panel above, you may notice a similarity between the two. Both the goofball in the title panel and the nerd at the far left of the subway cartoon are caricatures of myself, around ten years apart. The one with the full beard is the most recent. I’ve used versions of this image before but for this one, I changed all of the background jokes and a couple of the characters. If you have any problems reading the adverts across the top, you might be able to see them better if you look at the answer key.

If you’re tempted to ask me what this dog on the subway joke means, don’t bother. It doesn’t mean anything, it’s just a stupid talking dog gag.

Also, the cartoon I submitted to King Features for publication said this image has 12 Secret Symbols. When making the answer key, I could only find 11, so I changed it for this post. If you see this cartoon anywhere else in the world, it will say 12. Sorry about that. Counting beyond ten isn’t among my virtues, I guess.

Let’s jump now to Wayno’s Bizarro cartoons for the week!

A commentator on IG wondered why today’s “originalists” don’t seem too interested in considering the original residents of the Americas. Don’t get me started.

A few people asked if the therapist is modeled after Rene Magritte. Wayno answers that question in his blog post this week. (yes)

I LOVE this gag! The Dr. Bronner soap people liked it, too, and posted it on their social media. And the folks who run the Comics Kingdom shop at King Features liked it so much that they made a shower curtain out of it. It’s the perfect gift for your filthiest friends.

This cartoon plays into an age-old argument about whether noisy motorcycles are safer than quiet ones. I’m a longtime biker myself and do not believe that “loud pipes save lives” enough to warrant this obnoxious, macho behavior.

In my partner’s blog post this week, he includes a video of a TV commercial from the 60s for Mattel’s Vroom Engine. Both of us had one attached to our bikes when we were kids. (Even then, I thought it was too loud and didn’t use it often.)

This corral is not far from the Pretty Big Canyon.

And with that, I’ll say, “gidet mate.”

That concludes our cartoon collusion this week, Pickles of Jazz. If you dig our crazy vibes, please help us keep this blog free of ads, clickbait, or a paywall by visiting some of the links below. We will hold you in our minds fondly.

Until next time, be the change you want to see in your purse.
